What is this?

When a user searches for a person (e.g. a professor, staff, etc.) through the CUHK Web site, he probably cannot obtain an exhaustive list of relevant links/documents from our web space. This is due to the variations of the name the target person has ever used, or how he/she has been referred to by others. For example: "Peter Chan" might also be known as Chan TM, Peter TM Chan, 陳大文, etc.

To facilitate retrieval of a more comprehensive list of links/documents, an enhancement has been developed for the search function to expand a name into all of its registered variations. Under the name variations mode, when a web visitor searches for any of the registered variations of a person, the results will contain all the links/documents containing any of these variations.

The enhanced search function has now been deployed at the top-level CUHK Web site (www.cuhk.edu.hk). It covers all Web servers under the domain group of *.cuhk.edu.hk.

Register your name variations

The official Chinese and English names of CUHK staff members have been pre-registered in the system. Staff can maintain their names in the MyCUHK Portal (under the Services tab).

Suggested name variations

You may consider the use and omission of initials, Christian name, Romanized translation based on Putonghua, names in Traditional and Simplified Chinese, etc. Punctuations and titles, however, should be omitted.

For example, the following is a typical list of name variations: Peter Chan, T M Chan, TM Chan, Chan T M, Chan TM, Peter T M Chan, Peter TM Chan, Chan Peter, Chan Tai Man, Chen Da Wen, 陳大文, 陈大文

(We suggest including both "TM Chan" and "T M Chan" because they are treated differently by the search engine. However, it is not necessary to include "T. M. Chan" as searching for "T. M. Chan" or "T M Chan" will return the same results.)

Staff can also add name variations in the format appeared in their publications.
