香港中文大學（中大）今年再度舉行中國科學院（中科院）院士訪校計劃，邀得王乃彥院士、李燦院士、林學鈺院士、汪集暘院士、鄭有炓院士及周孝信院士由下周二（2月21日）起一連三天訪問中大，以增進雙方認識，並促進日後的合作。

王乃彥院士為核物理學家，現任中科院院士、中國核工業研究生部主任、中國核工業集團公司科技委高級顧問，以及中國原子能科學研究院副院長。王院士將主講「慣性約束聚變及快點火」，核聚變是當代自然科學一個重大的前沿研究課題。聚變能可成為未來一種取之不盡、用之不竭的新能源。於講座上，王院士將介紹激光核聚變研究的進展及其所存在的問題。

李燦院士現任中科院化學部常委、中科院大連化學物理研究所研究員、潔淨能源國家實驗室(籌)主任，主要從事催化材料、催化反應和催化光譜表徵方面的研究。他將主講「太陽能光催化制氫的科學挑戰」，介紹太陽能光催化制氫的原理和背景、目前進展情况、關鍵科學問題和技術瓶頸，並介紹其實驗室在這一領域的基礎研究方面所做的一些探索。太陽能光催化制氫是解決能源和環境問題的重要途徑之一，一旦突破將會對世界能源格局產生巨大影響。

林學鈺院士是水文地質與環境地質學家，現任吉林大學環境與資源學院名譽院長及水資源與環境研究所所長、北京師範大學水科學研究院教授、環境污染過程與基準教育部重點實驗室學術委員會主任，以及國際水文地質學家協會和國際水文科學委員會委員等。她將主講「中國地下水資源及典型地下水污染問題的研究現狀」，針對中國目前地下水污染現狀和研究水準，提出了多個值得關注的重要問題。

中科院地學部、中科院廣州能源所汪集暘院士為地熱和水文地質學家，他將以「地熱能開發利用與節能減排」為題主持講座。地熱是一種清潔的可再生能源，對全球減碳排放方面作用宏大。中國在直接利用地熱資源方面多年來穩居世界第一，但地熱發電的總裝機容量卻與地熱直接利用的總量極不相稱。汪院士於講座上，將針對中國地熱能開發利用現狀和存在的問題，提出相應對策與建議。

中科院信息學部、南京大學電子科學與工程學院鄭有炓院士將以「半導體能源技術發展現狀與展望」為題，介紹半導體能源技術的發展現狀和發展前景。鄭院士指出半導體能量光電子技術爲一種能源技術，用於把太陽輻射能轉換爲電能（光伏發電）和把電能高效轉換爲光能（固態照明）。這種能源技術日益受到全球高度重視，發展極其迅速，正在形成蓬勃發展的戰略性新興産業。

周孝信院士現任中科院技術學部副主任、中國電力科學研究院名譽院長、中國電機工程學會常務理事、學術工作委員會主任、電力系統專業委員會主任及中國電工技術學會常務理事。周院士長期從事電力系統分析和計算方法的研究。他以「我國新能源電力並網的挑戰和實踐」為講題，探討新能源發展的現狀、並網的挑戰，以及介紹新能源的實踐和經驗。

9 February 2012 CUHK Hosts Exhibition on the Origins of Dragons and CASS Archaeological Scholars Lecture on Dawn of Chinese Civilization

To greet the Year of the Dragon, the Centre for Chinese Archaeology and Art of the Institute of Chinese Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) will organize 'The First Dragon of China' exhibition jointly with The Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and Art Exhibitions China from 10 February 2012 to 27 January 2013. Members of the public are welcome.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition was held today (9 February), officiated by Prof. Joseph J. Y. SUNG, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK; Prof. WANG Wei, Director of Institute of Archaeology, CASS; Dr. Simon KWAN, Member of Advisory Committee of the Art Museum, CUHK; Prof. LEUNG Yuen-sang, Dean of Faculty of Arts, CUHK; Prof. Peter Y. K. LAM, Director of the Art Museum, CUHK; and Prof. TANG Chung, Director of Centre for Chinese Archaeology and Art, CUHK.

The Origins of Dragons: An Archaeological Perspective

The history of dragons is one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in Chinese culture. In the past, most people assumed that dragons are representations of Chinese emperors through the dynasties, yet very little is known about the origins of these mythological beasts. The exhibition presents the most recent findings from collaborations between CUHK and CASS, including investigations of early dragons in Neolithic China, the involvement of dragons in politics along with the rise of early civilization, and the appearance of dragon symbolism in Hong Kong more than 3,000 years ago. The examination of the origins of dragons from an archaeological perspective breaks popular myths about the nature of dragons.

Dragon-related National Treasures Displayed in Hong Kong

The exhibition showcases numerous rare artefacts, including a national treasure turquoise inlaid dragon plaque, as well as turquoise plates from a 'superb national treasure' – a large dragon-shaped object that has never been exhibited beyond mainland Chinese borders. Both dragon relics came from Erlitou in Henan, an archaeological site revered as the ‘First Capital of China’. The artefacts were contributed by the Institute of Archaeology at CASS.

Another noteworthy display is a 3,000-year-old Shang period yazhang, a ritual object excavated by CUHK on Lamma Island in Hong Kong. This yazhang was displayed in the 'National Treasures - Gems of China's Cultural Relics' exhibition, an event jointly organized by China's State Bureau of Cultural Relics and the Hong Kong Provisional Urban Council in 1997. Last year, the Centre for Chinese Archaeology and Art at CUHK confirmed for the first time that there is a pair of dragon symbols on both sides of this yazhang. It is believed that the yazhang arrived in Hong Kong from eastern Guangdong by sea. It is to date the earliest known symbol of dragons found in Hong Kong.

Learning about Our Past: Rediscovering Hong Kong's Roots

Hong Kong's dragon yazhang exemplifies how the territory's rich humanistic heritage reaches far back to the Shang period. To illustrate the societal background of this period, other precious Shang period artefacts excavated in Hong Kong will also be displayed at the exhibition, including ritual objects and necklace accessories of special status, militaristic symbol ge, and daily cooking utensils.

Members of the public are welcome to visit the CUHK Art Museum to view these exceptional artefacts of great academic and artistic value. Admission is free. The Centre for Chinese Archaeology and Art will also present its full-colour, bilingual publication The First Dragon of China Exhibition Catalogue at the exhibition. Supported by the CUHK Knowledge Transfer Project Fund, the publication is available for sale at HK$10. Proceeds will go towards supporting public understanding of archaeology. 'The First Dragon of China' is the third exhibition in the 'Forget Me Not - The Historical Roots of Hong Kong' exhibition series. Details are as follows:

Lecture Series by Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) Scholars

Apart from co-organizing 'The First Dragon of China' exhibition with CASS, CUHK staged the first 'CASS Scholars Visit Programme', inviting CASS scholars to visit the University each year and deliver public lectures to forge academic exchange in the humanities and social sciences. The programme aims at promoting high-level research and academic exchange between CUHK and CASS, and paving the way for further collaboration.

The first visit programme is held from 9 – 10 February in CUHK with the theme of archaeology. The CASS delegation comprises Prof. Wang Wei, Director of Institute of Archaeology, CASS; Prof. Xu Hong, Director of Department of Xia, Shang and Zhou Archaeology, Institute of Archaeology, CASS; Prof. Liu Guoxiang, Deputy Director of Centre for Public Archaeology, Institute of Archaeology, CASS; and Prof. Gong Wen, Deputy Director of Scientific Research Office of Institute of Archaeology, CASS. The delegates visited the Department of History, the Centre for Chinese Archaeology and Art of the Institute of Chinese Studies and the Art Museum at CUHK to learn about and exchange ideas on relevant research projects and developments.

During their visit, Professor Wang, Professor Xu and Professor Liu delivered three public lectures to share insight in their areas of expertise in archaeology. Professor Wang gave an overview of a number of research accomplishments in searching for the origin of Chinese civilization. Through a comparative study of ancient civilizations in China and other countries, Professor Wang outlined the origin and the formation process of Chinese civilization and addressed its status in the evolution of human civilization. Through introducing the excavation of the Erlitou site, Professor Xu examined the roles of palace planning, social structure, religious system and core culture in the emergence and development of early China. Professor Liu talked about the prehistoric development of Jade culture and its influence in the formation of ritual system in ancient China.

8 February 2012 香港精算師渴市　中大畢業生就業率近百分之百香港中文大學保險、財務及精算學課程(IFAA) 亞洲首獲北美精算學會認證「精算卓越中心」 (Chinese version only)

香港中文大學保險、財務及精算學(IFAA)課程宣布獲北美精算學會(Society of Actuaries, SOA) 頒發「精算卓越中心」(Center of Actuarial Excellence, CAE)之榮銜。這是北美地區對大學精算課程認證的最高榮譽，中大亦是亞洲第一輪獲得此榮銜的其中一所大學。

由北美精算學會針對大學課程頒發的「精算卓越中心」榮銜一向在北美被視為最高榮譽，過往共有21間北美一流大學獲此殊榮。去年中大的IFAA課程在接受北美精算學會特派的專員進行實地考核時表現突出，通過了該學會於多個範疇的嚴謹考核，包括課程設計、師資條件、畢業生質素、學術研究成就及與業界的關係等。

中大保險、財務及精算學課程主任陳偉森教授認為，中大能夠突圍而出的其中一個原因是畢業生的就業率，以及中大與業界之間的緊密連繫。能成為亞洲第一輪獲此殊榮的課程，商學院及課程上下師生感到份外欣喜。

陳教授進一步說明：「中大保險、財務及精算學課程於2002年成立以來，今年正式邁入第十年，過往幾年本課程畢業生在畢業後的就業率達到90%，另10%畢業生則選擇繼續深造。畢業生多半在畢業前已被業界爭相聘用，而學生在學時被各大機構聘為實習生的比例也接近100%。」他續說：「學生畢業後在不同商界領域任職，除保險、投資銀行業外，監管機構及資訊領域對於精算人才也十分渴求，且學生多半能在畢業3至5年後能取得月薪數萬元的收入。對2002年才創辦的課程而言，目前業界裡已有愈來愈多身居中高層人員是來自中大的畢業生，這使學校與業界的聯繫更形密切。」

此外，師資亦是中大保險、財務及精算學課程的一大優勢。陳教授表示，合資格的精算師在行內的待遇較學術界優越，而中大目前有三位全職教授同時擁有博士及精算師的資格，為本港所有同類型課程的最佳師資陣容，實屬難得。

「精算卓越中心」的資格為期五年。五年後會由北美精算學會對課程再度進行評核。中大IFAA課程的CAE資格由2011年12月15日起生效，直至2016年12月15日止。得到CAE資格的院校更有機會得到10萬美元教育或學術研究資助，學生亦會被邀請到美國芝加哥總部參與講座及交流。

香港中文大學商學院簡介

香港中文大學商學院由六個教學單位組成，包括會計學院、酒店及旅遊管理學院、決策科學與企業經濟學系、財務學系、管理學系及市場學系，是本港第一間提供工商管理碩士課程(MBA)和行政人員工商管理碩士（EMBA）課程的商學院。現時中大商學院合共提供10個本科課程及31個研究院課程(10個MBA/EMBA課程、15個碩士、MSc及MPhil課程，以及6個PhD課程)。

3 February 2012 CUHK Sir Run Run Shaw Distinguished Visiting Scholar Lecture 2011-12 Professor David C. L. Liu from Taiwan Tsing Hua University to Speak on ‘A College Student of the 21st Century: Educated and Civilized’ Now Open for Public Registration

Prof. David C.L. Liu, William Mong Honorary Chair Professor of Computer Science, Tsing Hua University in Taiwan and Sir Run Run Shaw Distinguished Visiting Scholar 2011-12, will speak on ‘A College Student of the 21^st Century: Educated and Civilized’ at Shaw College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) next Wednesday (8 February), sharing his ideas on ‘educated’ and ‘civilized’ and how university education is related to these concepts. Prof. David C. L. Liu is an internationally renowned scholar in computer science who was the Associate Provost at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign from 1996 to 1998. Later from 1998 to 2002, Professor Liu became the President of the Tsing Hua University in Taiwan where he is currently the William Mong Honorary Chair Professor of Computer Science. He received his Bachelor of Science degree at the Cheng Kung University in Taiwan and his Master of Science and Doctor of Science degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His teaching career spans over forty years at MIT, the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and the Tsing Hua University in Taiwan.

Since 1989, CUHK Shaw College has been organizing the Sir Run Run Shaw Distinguished Visiting Scholar Lecture to invite an internationally distinguished scholar or individual to visit the College and give lectures annually. Past visiting scholars included Prof. Yang Chen-ning, Prof. Lee Yuan-tseh, Prof. Yau Shing-tung, Prof. Ho Ping-ti, Prof. Andrew Yao, Prof. Charles Kao, Prof. Deborah Davis, Prof. Xu Guanhua, and Prof. Harry Lewis etc.

1 February 2012 Inauguration Ceremony of 'Translation Archive of The Chinese University of Hong Kong' and Opening Ceremony of 'The David Hawkes Papers: An Exhibition' Held Today

The Department of Translation and the University Library System at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) today (1 February) held the inauguration ceremony of the 'Translation Archive of The Chinese University of Hong Kong' cum opening ceremony of 'The David Hawkes Papers: An Exhibition'. Officiating guests included Prof. Joseph J. Y. Sung, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK; Prof. Leung Yuen-sang, Dean of Faculty of Arts, CUHK; Mrs. Jean Hawkes; Prof. Chan Sin-wai, Chairman of the Department of Translation, CUHK; Prof. John Minford, David Hawkes' Literary Executor and Professor, Department of Translation, CUHK; and Dr. Colin Storey, University Librarian, CUHK. The event was also one of the celebratory activities of the 40^th Anniversary of the Department of Translation.

The 'Translation Archive of The Chinese University of Hong Kong' (the Archive) aims to provide a valuable source of primary materials for translation scholars and students to study the 'translator at work'. The Archive preserves and makes available rare firsthand materials, such as manuscripts of translations, early drafts and revisions, notebooks, books annotated by translators, correspondence between translators and publishers, between collaborating translators, between translators and authors. It also contains digital resources like video and audio interviews. The Archive will bridge the gap between the study of translation theory and the study of translation practice, enabling scholars to provide critical examples demonstrating the methods of work of outstanding translators, and to ground their theoretical studies in telling empirical evidence. This precious resource will encourage students and practitioners of the art of translation to study how experienced translators have worked to rise to the challenges of translation. The Archive is conceived of as a Hong Kong-wide and international resource. It will focus initially on translation between Chinese and English, and will be expanded to cover translation between other languages.

Today also marked the opening ceremony of 'The David Hawkes Papers: An Exhibition'. The late Prof. David Hawkes, known for his masterful rendering of the first eighty chapters of The Story of the Stone (《紅樓夢》or《石頭記》), is a renowned translator of Chinese literature. With the kind consent of Mrs. Jean Hawkes, The David Hawkes Papers have been donated to the Archive by Prof. John Minford, Professor Hawkes' Literary Executor, to become the first important collection of materials deposited in the Archive. It consists of many unpublished manuscripts of Professor Hawkes, including an extensive study of the entire corpus of Yuan drama (元雜劇). Among the books in the collection are Professor Hawkes' own annotated copy of the first Oxford University Press edition of The Songs of the South (《楚辭》) which gave valuable insight into his revisions incorporated into the later Penguin Classics edition (1985). There is also a voluminous and most informative correspondence between Professor Hawkes and various editors at Penguin Books, as well as letters (hitherto unpublished) relating to Professor Hawkes' translation work on The Deer and the Cauldron《鹿鼎記》.
