1. Central Authentication and Directory Service

You're often asked to enter your CWEM account and password for authentication when accessing certain web applications of the University.  But, are these applications authentic and authorized to ask for your account and password? Be a smart user and check against the list of authorized applications at Central Authentication and Directory Service (CADS).

A CADS authorized web application should bear a CADS logo and CADS reference number.


2. Beware of E-mail Asking for Your Password – Phishing Alert

Recently, there have been some phishing e-mails sent to CUHK users that appear to be sent by ITSC or CUHK requesting users to confirm or validate their e-mail account, password and personal information by replying to the sender or by clicking a hyperlink in the e-mails. Please note that ITSC or CUHK will NEVER ask for your e-mail password.

3. Mind the Posting of Sensitive Data on the Web

In view of concerns about IT security and the protection of personal data privacy, the Information Security Section (ISS) of ITSC has started a regular exercise to use some public search engines to search sensitive data under the CUHK domain. Sensitive data includes academic results, mobile phone numbers, addresses, student ID and etc. The purpose of this exercise is to send timely advices and reminders to assist the Web administrators to review their website content so as to protect the University image, reputation and legal position.

You should have the prescribed consent of the data owner before posting the personal data on the web. Please refer to principle 3 of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance.


4. Wi-Fi Services Updates

The coverage of the Central Wi-Fi Service, which gives free Internet access for University staff, students, alumni and guests, has been extended. Besides, we are pleased to announce two major advancements of Wi-Fi services.

5. Free Windows 7 Upgrade Kit for Notebooks Purchased from 2009 Student Notebook Ownership Programme

If you have bought a notebook with Windows Vista Home Premium from Student Notebook Ownership Programme 2009, you can get a free Windows 7 Upgrade Kit after a pre-registration. The registration deadline is 4 Dec 2009.

6. Financial Information System

With effect from 28 Sep 2009, budget holders can retrieve their financial statements via a web-based application. This is made possible through the Financial Information System which is developed jointly by the Information Technology Services Centre and the Bursary using SAP Portal. The system simplifies and streamlines the financial statements generation process for the University, and could potentially help to save over 10,000 papers every month.

7. Courseware Development Grant – Call for Application

The Academic IT Steering Committee (AITSC) has established the Courseware Development Grant Scheme (CDGS) in the 2007-2008 academic year to encourage teachers to move forward from the basic use of e-Learning towards developing more interactive and inspiring e-learning environment for their students. It is now the third year and inviting applications from members of the teaching staff for projects funded under this allocation.
