1. Enhancements of Spam Filtering Service (SFS)

The Spam Filtering Service (SFS) of Campus-wide E-mail System (CWEM) identifies thousands of spam everyday. On average, about 50% of e-mails sent to @cuhk.edu.hk addresses have been identified by SFS as spam.

With effect from 14 March, the Spam Filtering Service will be enhanced in the following ways:

  1. Include Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse (DCC) for Spam Identification
  2. Insertion of "[SPAM-ITSC]" in the Subject of a Spam
  3. Change to the "Reject" Option

SFS provides you with three options - label, discard and folder - to handle the identified spam that sent to your @cuhk.edu.hk mailbox. You can update your perference through the CUHK Online Directory.


2. "Microsoft FaceIT" Seminar on 23 March

Representatives from Microsoft will come to CUHK on 23 March to give a seminar on "Microsoft FaceIT". The seminar will focus on the latest technology and development in Internet security, enterprise application and system management. Besides, there will be an open forum session so that you can discuss with the speakers about the IT industry and possible career paths.

3. Meeting with LAN Administrators on 15 March

We hold regular meetings with the University LAN Administrators to maintain close communication, enhance technology transfer and exchange latest IT development.

4. Seminar Review: CKC 2002 - An alternative Chinese Input Method

CKC 2002 is a Chinese Input System which only requires you to learn a few rules before using it.

The last CKC 2002 demonstration session has drawn lots of attention. Many attendees were able to pick up this input method right after the demonstration session.

5. Internet Security: Spyware Ranked the BIGGEST Threat to Network Security in 2005

Have you ever experienced a slow Internet access, or even network disconnections? Have you ever been annoyed by the bombardment of pop-up advertisements? Since last September, our HelpDesk has received a number of reports about these problems when tapping on the network. After a detailed investigation, we found these computers were infected by not only virus but also SPYWARE.

According to a survey conducted by WatchGuard Technologies, spyware has been ranked as the biggest threat to network security in 2005. In the same survey, however, over 50% users do not know what it is.

Spyware is a software installed on your computer without your consent or knowledge. It can hide in your computer and monitor your activities while you are online.


6. Behind the Scenes : Back-end Support for the Front-lines - the Computer Resource Usage and Performance Statistics System

A few statistics for year 2004:

  • the number of Webmail users surpassed POP users by 60%;
  • on average over 8,000 CPU hours of users' jobs were processed on the HPC server "Orpin" each month, representing 73% utilization of the available capacity;
  • usage of computer laboratories in March and November alone represents 30% of the utilization for the whole year.

These statistics, produced by the in-house developed Computer Resource Usage and Performance Statistics System, provides useful information for the planning and deployment of ITSC's services.

The statistics reveals that there is about 25% growth in the number of webmail users in academic year 2004-05 than in 2003-04. And the peak is in September when the teaching term begins.
