OPPORTUNITY - Teaching Development Grants

The next round of Teaching Development Grants will be announced soon. Teachers interested in working on eLearning projects to promote teaching and learning in their classes are advised to start planning proposals. The eLearning Service is happy to consult with teachers on both technical and pedagogical issues. Please contact Judy Lo (judyl@cuhk.edu.hk) or Paul Lam (paul.lam@cuhk.edu.hk).

SHARING - Common virtual learning space for the whole programme

The teachers of the French programme use Web functions to create a common virtual learning space for students in all French courses to access learning resources, practice language skills and have discussions. Both teachers and students go to this French programme platform (built on Moodle) for news, updates of activities and out-of-class communication. Additional learning resources for students on the platform include:

  • Audio-enabled dictation exercises
  • Grammar notes and interactive reading exercises
  • Clips of French songs
  • Information on French culture
  • Video clips with interactive exercises

The virtual learning activities held include:

  • Student blogs
  • Forums for Q&A between teachers and students
  • Joint projects that make use of forums for students to work with students in Europe

After an initial period of getting used to the online functions and interface, both students and teachers in the programme now find the platform indispensable. Site logs show that the usage of the various functions is growing. High numbers of teacher-student and student-student interactions are also recorded in the different forums. Teachers are impressed by the ability of the students in communicating effectively online in French.

TECHNOLOGY - Freeware for developing simple learning objects

There are a number of user-friendly programmes that teachers can use to create learning materials of specific types. The materials are usually in standalone formats (flash or html files) that can be zipped and then given to students. One advantage of building standalone learning objects is that students can use the materials offline. Teachers may also find maintaining and upgrading the materials relatively easy as both the materials and the development software reside in their own computers. Below are some of these programmes and what they can do for you.

What does it do?

STRATEGIES - Wordle

Teachers can have a new way to analyze students' writing (through using Wordle)!

Wordle is described as 'a toy for generating "word clouds" from text that you provide'. Teachers input text into the software which changes the sizes of the different key words in the text depending on their respective prominence in the text. The clouds are bigger for words that appear more frequently in the source text. In this way, you can easily compare the main themes of your students' work. You can further tweak the fonts and colours of these outputs and convert them into images for sharing. More information can be found at http://www.wordle.net/
