| Health Need Assessment of a 2008 Forgotten Earthquake in Jin Sha Jiang: From the Study Team's Perspective |
In collaboration with the Wu Zhi Qiao (Bridge to China) Charitable Foundation, the SPH Humanitarian Public Health Assessment team had visited the 2008 Panzhihau earthquake affected area around Jin Sha Jiang in March 2009. The assessment was conducted in the border area around Yunnan and Sichuan, and our study site constituted of a dozen of villages, whose population was mainly ethnic minority groups that were sparsely distributed along the upstream of Jin Sha Jiang — the origin of Yangtze River. For logistic reasons, we had to travel from Kunming, Yunnan, and our team only managed to reach the village closest to the main "road" after 18 hours of bumpy car ride in the mountain, having to cross the river several times along the way. For the route up to the furthest village, it would require at least another 40 minutes of speedboat travel upstream, then additional hiking along the river bank. If modern telecommunication coverage were an indication of remoteness, the lack of network coverage of both our mobile phones and newly-rented satellite phones could be evidence of how far away we were from modern civilization. |
