German Ambassador to China Analyses Sino-German Relationship at Chinese University |

Dr. Volker Stanzel, ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to China, was invited by CUHK to deliver a lecture on campus on 1st March 2006. The lecture, entitled 'Global Challenges Need Global Answers: Tasks for Germany, Tasks for China' was attended by some 200 guests including CUHK staff and students and consuls-general in Hong Kong.
Dr. Stanzel studied Japanese Studies, Chinese Studies, and Political Science at Frankfurt University, Kyoto University and Cologne University respectively. He received his Ph.D. from Cologne University. Dr. Stanzel joined the Foreign Service of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1979 and has worked at German embassies in Rome, Tokyo, Aden and Beijing. He has headed the Press and Information Department of the German Embassy in Beijing, the Operation Centre of the Foreign Office in Bonn, and the Department for Non-proliferation and Civilian Use of Nuclear Energy of the Foreign Office in Berlin. He was Foreign Policy Advisor to the Social Democratic Party of Germany in the German Bundestag, Visiting Fellow of the German Marshall Fund in the US at Washington, director for Asian and Pacific Affairs, and director-general for political affairs. He became German Ambassador to China in September 2004. Dr. Stanzel has published widely on politics and East Asian affairs.
