The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is expanding the training of public health professionals from postgraduate to undergraduate level. CUHK School of Public Health (SPH) is introducing the new Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSc in Public Health) programmme in September. It is the first undergraduate public health programme in Hong Kong aims to equip students from all disciplines with knowledge and skills in public health.
Similar to other developed countries, Hong Kong is facing many public health challenges, such as human swine flu (Influenza A H1N1) epidemic, obesity, diabetes, poor air quality, an aging population and food safety. At the forefront of public health education, the School of Public Health of the Faculty of Medicine has designed a new Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSc in Public Health). It is the first and the only undergraduate programme in Hong Kong of its kind and will provide students who have an interest in public health with valuable insight into population health issues. The programme targets to accept 35 students in the first intake.
Concepts students can expect to grasp include the social determinants of health, environmental impact on health, healthy lifestyles, public health law and ethics, biostatistics and epidemiology fundamentals, emergency preparedness and disaster response, infectious diseases, and health services reform.The curriculum has been designed to lay a sound foundation through the study of population sciences, legal and ethical issues; comprehending the importance and influence of primary care; and concentrating on a specialised area according to the student's own strength. The normative study period is 3 years. This programme is benchmarked with world-class universities in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The graduates will be able to play diverse roles in helping the increasing demands of public health professionals in our society.
