CUHK Wins Putonghua Debate

The Putonghua Debate Team of The Chinese University defeated the defending champion Baptist University, to capture its first championship of the seventh Intervarsity Putonghua Debate Competition held on 11th November 2006. Tian Zi, vice-captain of the team, was named a 'Best Debater'. The Intervarsity Putonghua Debate Competition 2006, a highlight of Hong Kong's Putonghua Festival, was organized by RTHK Putonghua Channel and the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research.

The CUHK team was coached by Qiu Chen, a Master student in New Media. In the preliminary rounds, they beat Lingnan University and the City University of Hong Kong respectively, and went on to defeat the City University of Hong Kong in the semi-finals, and later, Baptist University in the finals. In the past six years, CUHK had come second three times and third once. 
 
The final motion was 'White lies do not harm one's credibility.' and the CUHK team, taking up the affirmative, defeated Baptist University by a score of four to one. Their performance was lauded by the panel of judges which comprised The Hon. Henry Fan Hung-ling, SBS, JP, a non-official member of the Executive Council, The Hon. Wong Ting-kwong, member of the Legislative Council, Mr. Frederick H.F. Chan of the Hong Kong Bar Association, Mr. Gilbert Mo, Deputy Law Draftsman of the Department of Justice, and Mr. Tai Keen-man, Assistant Director of Broadcasting (Radio Division) of RTHK.

The team will represent Hong Kong to take part in the 12th Hitachi Cup Mainland Intervarsity Putonghua Debate Competition this December, for the National Championship Title.
